I will talk about the motivation behind the thousand pulsar array programme on MeerKAT and how modern data are helping answer open questions. I will concentrate on the geometry and emissions of radio pulsars, and how they evolve with time. As by-products, our data are also providing measurements of the distribution of ionized mater in the Galaxy, and helping provide a higher resolution picture of the Galactic magnetic field than currently exists. I will show early results and argue for equivalent surveys on future telescopes.
